Terms of Use and Privacy

Please read this page carefully.  If you do not accept these terms of use, you are not permitted to use this site or services.  Any use by you of this site or related services indicates your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these terms of use. Failure to comply with any of the terms of use may result in cancellation of your account and denial of further access to the site and any events or services listed on the site. We reserve the right to change the terms of use at any time. It is the member’s responsibility to check periodically for changes.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS

 

To use the site only for its intended purposes: This site is an online community designed for members of the MIT community who want to find conversation partners for language and cultural exchange.  The site should not be used for any other purpose.

Certain uses of this site are inconsistent with the purposes of this site, constitute a violation of this policy and are prohibited. Such prohibited uses include but are not limited to (a) activities that are illegal (e.g. are fraudulent or violate copyright or other laws); (b) use that violates MIT policies and procedures; (c) use for a commercial purpose; (d) mass mailings, faxes or emails (sometimes known as spamming); and (e) any other use determined to be inappropriate by the site administrator.

You agree that you will only use the site for the legitimate purposes described in this policy. You also agree that all information you provide when registering and all information you post to the site will be truthful and accurate, and will not violate any law or MIT policy.  MIT may deny further access to the site and any events or services listed on the site to anyone who violates this policy.

 

To protect your password:  When you register as a member of the MIT Language Conversation Exchange site, you will be asked to select a username and a password. It is your responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of your password and username and you are responsible for all activity that occurs under them. We are unable to verify the identity of people using the site and will not in any way be liable if your password or username are used by someone else. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your password or username and any other breach of security as soon as you become aware of it

 

To respect other members’ privacy: MIT Language Conversation Exchange allows members to share information and to search for certain profile information in order to find other members with similar interests. Members may only use the information on this site for their own personal use, and may not sell, transfer or distribute any information from this site to third parties.

 

To screen all information: We do not screen our members. Anyone can join MIT Language Conversation Exchange simply by being affiliated with MIT and registering for an account.

The information found in the profiles is created by the members, not by MIT and not by experts, and is not screened or moderated by MIT or the administrator. You are fully responsible for any and all content and communications that you post or transmit to the site or to any other user of the site, as well as for any consequences of such postings and transmissions. You are also fully responsible for evaluating the information offered on the site.

 

MIT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONTENT ON THE SITE, MAKES NO REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY ABOUT THE CONTENT ON THE SITE, AND EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ANY LIABILITY WITH RESPECT TO ANY CONTENT ON THE SITE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY OF INFORMATION ON THE SITE, ERRORS OR OMISSIONS ON THE SITE, LIBEL, SLANDER, INFRINGEMENT OF RIGHTS OF PUBLICITY, PRIVACY, TRADEMARK RIGHTS, MORAL RIGHTS, OR THE DISCLOSURE OF CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION. MIT WILL IN NO EVENT BE LIABLE TO ANY USER OF THE SITE FOR ANY DIRECT OR INDIRECT DAMAGES WHICH MAY ARISE OUT OF OR IN CONJUNCTION WITH USE OF THE SITE. USE OF THIS SITE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

 

To follow MIT policy and MITnet Rules of Use: This includes but is not limited to not harassing any members, not violating the privacy of other users, and not copying or misusing copyrighted material. Failure to comply with this policy, MIT Policy and Procedures, or MITnet Rules of Use may result in removal of postings or deletion of your account by the administrator.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ADMINISTRATOR:

 

  • To respond to members’ questions about using the site

  • To resolve technical problems with the site

  • To remove inactive profiles

  • To remove inappropriate content and postings

  • To remove accounts of members who are using the site inappropriately or who do not follow our terms of use or MIT policy

  • To not use or share your information for any other purpose, unless required by law.

 

 

PRIVACY

Your Personal Information MIT Language Conversation Exchange allows members to share personal information and to search for certain profile information in order to find other members with similar interests. You choose what information you put in your profile, including contact and personal information, and interests.

 

The following information is required to register for an account and will be viewable by other users: first name, last name, gender, MIT affiliation, birth date, email address, native language, native country, the language you would like to practice, and fluency in those languages. Your birth date will not be viewable by other users, but your age will be shown in a range.

 

We will not make your contact information or any other personally identifiable information available to anyone outside the MIT Language Conversation Exchange, unless we are required by law or in a health or safety emergency.

 

Your Email Address: Your email address is required to register for an account. This allows other users to contact you about your availability for a language exchange.

You may receive email from the administrator from time to time, to inform you of changes to the site or to survey you about your use or opinion of the site.

 

Other Information We Collect:

We collect information you may provide about your use of and satisfaction with MIT Language Conversation Exchange through email you send us, and through MIT Language Conversation Exchange surveys.

 

When we report information about MIT Language Conversation Exchange access, use, and impact, we will report aggregate, non-personally identifiable data. Occasionally, we will report quoted feedback from users. We do not attribute feedback to specific individuals unless we obtain permission to use that person's name along with the feedback.

 

Links on the Site:

From time to time the administrator may post links and references to other sites that may be helpful to MIT Language Conversation Exchange members. You acknowledge and agree that MIT has no control over, does not endorse and is not responsible in any way for the content of such sites, and that you are solely responsible for reviewing and screening these sites for your own purposes.

 

Technical Issues:

MIT is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunctions of the site, of any connection to the site, or any communication failure. MIT is also not responsible for any damage to a member’s computer or any virus or computer malfunction that may be transmitted via the site. Use of the site is at the members’ own risk.

 

Limitation of Liability:

IN NO EVENT WILL MIT BE LIABLE TO ANY MEMBER OR ANY OTHER PERSON OR ENTITY FOR ANY DIRECT OR INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, PUNITIVE OR OTHER SPECIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM USE OF THE SITE, EVEN IF MIT HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
